Thanks Giving in Canada……. Harvest Festival …… Scotland…..Hmmmmmm?

Question answered this morning. Canada celebrates Thanks Giving yes two words originally not the feast of the Pilgrims but rather Thanks to the Lord for a wonderful Harvest. A quote from my Friend and brother Apprentice Padre Art Turnbull.

I always remind people that the Canadian Thanksgiving is not the American one that is celebrated with pilgrims and turkey.  Ours is rooted in Christian ritual and has to do with the harvesting in the Fall when the fruit of the earth is brought in to provide sustenance for the winter.  Modern people only know the USA version and are not connected to the rural agricultural source of the food they eat.  There is something important about the giving of thanks in a spiritual way that recognizes our dependence on the Earth.  God is good but we people have to remember to recognize that.  Food cannot be taken for granted.  Ask the people in south Sudan’s rural communities, or the refugees in Jordan, or the people on our hidden away spots in all of the cities.  Robby, have a good Canadian Thanksgiving and God bless.  Cheers, Art

Yes now you have had a reminder. In Scotland their are festivals of Harvest conducted in Kirks through out the land all about the same time as Canadian Thanks Giving, Kirks of all denominations are decorated, food is gathered for food banks ( a sad requirement in the year of our Lord 2015) Prayers are given of thanks for a bountiful harvest, Thanks are given for friends and neighbours. A special prayer is given in many Kirks for Troops serving Queen and Country.

Bet you were wondering where I would fit in a DOG, a natural choice simply because we all know what DOG is spelt backwards. HAPPY THANKS GIVING One and all.

So now Canadians who read this Blog will now know that our Thanksgiving  means much more than the arrival of the Pilgrims and is much older.

Stay Tuned folks……
